Princess and the Frog

The Princess and the Frog is Disney’s spin on the old Frog Prince story. Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. It’s the first time Disney made a movie about Voodoo. Disney is always looking to break new ground, but they were obviously behind a bit on this one. It’s okay because nothing transcends generations, genders, religions or races the way that Disney does.

Disney went with the traditional 2-D format to help provide it with a sort of gritty look, if you will. It’s set in New Orleans and a good majority of the movie takes place in the Bayou of all places. The short of the story is that a real Prince is turned into a frog by a Voodoo witch doctor named, the Shadow Man. When Tiana, kisses the frog she too is turned into a frog. The moral of the story is this, don’t mess with Voodoo.

This quickly became one of my favorite Disney movies. It’s not as nice and cuddly as some of the others, but in another way it’s not as messed up either (Lion King). It’s in the same vein as the traditional Disney movies, but with a twist of Tabasco sauce. Voodoo is definitely the scariest thing in the entire world, but Disney somehow manages to make it okay.  I didn’t lose any sleep and that’s really what matters.
