Review: "Once"

You want to talk about a guy that is pissed? The opening scene shows Glen Hansard
singing “Say It To Me Now.” It starts out as a slow acoustic ballad and escalates into a
roaring mad last chance for someone to speak now or forever hold their piece.

Hansard, of the band the Frames, plays a street performing guitarist in Dublin, Ireland.
He is approached by Marketa Irglova, also a real-life musician, about his music. They
begin to play songs together and eventually fall into a complicated love that is ultimately
doomed due to her being married.

The movie is shot like a documentary, even though it’s not one. It’s not really a musical
either, but it was a genius move putting these musicians in the movie to write and
perform all of the songs. Glen Hansard is a top notch Irish singer-song writer.

The combination of Hansard and Irglova give us a wonderful collection of songs such
as: “When Your Mind’s Made Up”, “Lies” and the Oscar winning “Falling Slowly.” If
you love music you should enjoy this flick. The movie is pretty good too.

Did You Know? – Glen Hasnard is no stranger to movies. He was the red head in the
Commitments about an Irish soul band. Good stuff.
