Gnomeo and Juliet

Gnomeo and Juliet is an animated film inspired by the classic tragedy written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. The film is set in two neighboring yards with opposing garden Gnome gangs, the Blue and the Red (Bloods and Crips?). They rock out to Sir Elton John’s collection of songs throughout the picture.

It’s a nice way to teach young kids about the original story. In this instance, CGI was almost necessary to bring to life the texture in the garden Gnomes. There are a number of well known celebrities that provide voices, but the most surprising is Ozzie Osbourne providing the voice for a garden version of Rudolph. Actually, it’s not too surprising given Ozzie’s recent history.

Overall it was kind of like angry Gnomes meet Toy Story. I enjoyed it, but just wait to catch it on cable or in the $5 bin.
